Memories of Political Belonging
Madhur Canteen, Beauty Boarding, and Coffee House had played a vital role in the democratic struggles of the past century in both Bengal by providing an interactive space for young artists, cultural and political activists. The everyday hangouts of young minds are still there, but the significance of these places as public spaces is lost, thanks to the absence of democratic politics of recent times. Meanwhile, over the last two decades, Chobir Haat in Dhaka has gradually evolved as an open space making possible the interaction among such people. But five years ago, the government barred access to that public space. The creative young minds of Dhaka had lost their last meeting place. It is the restriction on access to Chobir Haat that have inspired me to photograph the memories of these public spaces.
